Make No Demands -- Lead by Example

I have a brilliant friend who writes books and has been a "cutting edge" editor with leading publishers. She edited my first book and had a lot to do with the success of the second one. One of her caveats is to forego making demands on others, especially if you insist that someone change his behavior. Her mantra is 'be an example of what you are trying to get others to do'. She refers to it as servant leadership. It takes a lot of trust in yourself to do the best you can to get your point across. And it also insinuates that you walk your talk.

I had a meeting with someone this week who has been struggling with his sobriety. He has been a lot of places trying to find out how to stop drinking. I shared what worked for me and left him with the opportunity to change the things he can by doing what I did/do if he wants to stay sober as long as I have. One more time I am through with making demands. The easier, softer way is to lead by example.
