It is beginning to dawn on all of us, as naturally as the sun always rises, that there are a lot of people who are not who they say they are. Three nominees for top Cabinet positions in the Obama Administration have been exposed as not having paid taxes like “the rest of us little people”; words that caused mean-spirited hotelier and real estate mogul and billionaire Leona Helmsley, dubbed the Queen of Mean, to serve 19 months in Federal prison for tax evasion in 1989.
Wall Street arrogance continues to infect the efforts of the Congress to pass a $900 billion stimulus to save our country from total financial collapse and resultant chaos. All of these things are happening with millions of people already out of work, losing their homes and unable to pay their bills. Remember when John Dean blew the whistle on the chicanery of the Nixon White House with the words, ‘Mr. President, there is a cancer growing on the Presidency”? Might we not repeat these very same words to President Obama, not from his own malfeasance, because of the actions and attitudes of those amongst us whom we have trusted with our way of life-undermining our trust in the very institutions that have been the underpinning of our Republic?
When I was a kid in the God-fearing South there was an old preacher who stirred us sinners up with the sermon that thundered through the tent, “Payday someday”. Well, folks, you don’t have to be ten years-old and quaking in your rundown-heeled boots to be awakened to the notion that it is ‘payday someday’. These issues of survival are contingent on each of us to ask ourselves, “Are these people mirroring me and my attitudes and actions about fiscal and ethical collaborative responsibility?” “Do I need to take an honest and moral inventory to discover that I am not who I think I am-and now is the time to join the hordes that must change themselves to change the world?”
