Senator Clinton, Fear and Assassination

Tuesday, May 27th, 2008

Bill SharonMy grandmother was 19 when women achieved emancipation. I look at my 13 year old daughter and cannot imagine her growing up in a country where her voice, her thoughts and opinions would not count. I can understand, although I can never really know, what it means to women to have a woman run for and achieve the Presidency. But political dynasties are not good for democracy and Senator Clinton’s remarks about her staying in the race because Senator Kennedy was assassinated in June of 1968 demonstrates the ignorance if not arrogance of the sense of entitlement. It appears that she has effectively removed herself from a spot on the Democratic ticket.

While the outrage over her comments has effectively ended her campaign (regardless of whether she insists on competing in the few remaining primary battles) her candidacy provides a stark example of the disastrous tactics of “divide and conquer through fear.” It is those tactics that gave us George Bush. It is those tactics that generated the political warfare throughout Bill Clinton’s Presidency. It is those tactics that have resulted in such a profound weariness of conflict across the land.

Senator Clinton’s assassination reference strikes at the core of the worst in us. It calls up that desire to have something bad happen to someone more successful so that perhaps we can gain. She does, however, operate in the context of her experience. Politics is a tough business and chance plays a large role. She essentially walked into her first term as a senator because her opponent, Rudy Giuliani, got prostate cancer. Things do happen, but planning and waiting for personal success on the chance that something bad will happen to your opponent puts winning way ahead of integrity or belief in one’s positions.

Senator Clinton would have us believe that she is a fighter, that she will fight the Republicans tooth and nail. No doubt she would and no doubt we would be in for more of the posturing and partisan fighting that makes us despair of the political process. It would seem that we are witnessing the last gasp of the politics of separation before we can get on with the politics of common goals. This sense that it is permissible to say anything (even if it is inaccurate) or do anything to win and that winning is the most important thing is being exposed for what it really is – a corrosive ideology that is cynical about any of us rising above the level of pack animals snarling at each other over limited resources.

No doubt that Senator Clinton has blazed a trail for more women to be seen as serious candidates for high office and that is a good thing. The feminine focus on society and relationships and community are essential in our politics and our economics as we move into this millennium. It is imperative that these attributes not be seen as a weakness – in a woman or in a man.

May 27th Planet Mercury is going Retrograde—don’t sign those papers!

mercury-retrograde.jpg

On May 27th the planet Mercury is going retrograde, a phenomenon which signals not a good time to sign legal documents, start new projects—and you better check out all things mechanical from your air conditioner, computer and the automobile you depend on to get you from point A to B. Electricity is ruled by Mercury so if you live in an ‘hotter than hell’ palazzo like I do in Sedona, tend to your air conditioner before you lose your cool. And no matter how ragged and rough Bubba or Wanda has become through your long and troubled marriage, stay put for a few weeks. Do not go to Judge Judy’s divorce court or get married in the Elvis Presley chapel in Las Vegas under Mercury retrograde. Put off elective surgery—never rehab your house under these menacing Mercury times either.

Okay, so what can you do that can keep you out of trouble and lolling in the pink? It is a good time to review your financial red ink, do some spring cleaning—it’s okay to peruse your game plan and see where you need to plug holes or perhaps even start over. But wait for more fortuitous times to begin the make-over.

There is a cardinal rule in astrology that most of us break, but for those of you trained to live life on life’s terms—dot all i’s and cross your t’s—things begin to act like Mercury is in retrograde a week before it happens and even a week after Mercury goes direct in motion. That means you better start today to make adjustments in the areas I have mentioned above. Mercury goes direct on June 19th but you had better wait until June 26th to feel like your world is back on track and normal again.

And always remember the Gaulden Rule: Whatever you do, right or wrong, you must take responsibility for your actions. God is an equal opportunity Creator—it rains on the just and the unjust. When I am dealt lemons granny told me to make lemon meringue pies, and that I have done with the proof on my waist. But a little extra weight is better than getting resentments any day.

Ta, ta.

This week’s prayer visualization
The last few weeks have seen an increase in natural disasters around the world, especially in China and Myanmar. We will focus on sending a prayer visualization to these in need, calling for effective relief actions and comforting victims. Also, as usual, we will focus on the needs of our participants, sending a prayer visualization for all those experiencing grief, conflicts, illness, or indecision.

Follow-up discussion
How can we personally cope with suffering in our own lives? What do the wisdom traditions tell us about staying upbeat and positive in a world with natural challenges?

______

Our twice-monthly gatherings have been making a powerful difference, both in people’s individual lives and the world at large. Many of you have written us saying that the energy generated from this network of spiritually-minded participants is “indescribable,” and we look forward to continuing this healing circle of focused prayer. Like all prayer experience devoted to helping others, many participants have felt the results in their own bodies and received guidance for their own lives.

Research tells us that the more people praying together, the more powerful the prayer and the greater the level of energy felt by the participants. We invite you to join the largest regular prayer network in the world. If you would like to take an active role in maintaining a circle of positive intention across the globe, while going deeper and heightening your own spirituality, join us on Tuesday, May 20.

EXTENDING PRAYER FIELDS
For centuries, religious scriptures, poems, and philosophies have pointed to a latent power of mind within all of us that mysteriously helps to affect what occurs in the future. We are now finding that this prayer power is a field of intention, which moves out from us and can be extended and strengthened, especially when we connect with others in a common vision.

10 Myths and Misconceptions about Meditation

Thursday, May 15th, 2008

Sarah McLeanI’ll have to stop thinking.

Well good luck with that. You can’t – it is impossible. The nature of the mind is to think, like the nature of your eye is to see. The purpose of meditation is to enliven the space and silence between the thoughts, not to stop the thoughts from coming altogether. Over time, as you practice meditation correctly, you’ll find that you can easily access more and more subtle levels of thinking, and more and more silence.

It takes years of practice and requires super-human powers of concentration.

This is totally false. Meditation is a skill that anyone can learn. It takes little more than the ability to sit still, close your eyes and focus on something. Some meditations have you focus on an area of your body, or a color, a candle flame, a sound, or a thought. You’ll need to spend a few minutes every day to practice turning your attention inward, but anyone can do it. Most people can do it easily the very first time.

I’ve tried it and I can’t do it.

As long as you can sit down and close your eyes, you can meditate. (more…)

It’s not easy being Green, or even truthful it would seem

Bill SharonThere is a new commercial for Windex on television these days. It features the Fisk Johnson, the CEO and Chairman of SC Johnson (the company that makes Windex) talking about the new Greenlist version of the product. In an earnest voice he tells consumers that they have a right to a product that actually works; the implication being that many of the other, smaller companies that produce “green” cleaning products don’t actually work. Taken at face value, one would think that the economic process is working. Consumers are more aware of the need to use products that don’t poison the environment, not to mention themselves and a major producer of those products has altered their offering to contribute to the common good and recapture market share. Lunacy and Freedom

By Bill Sharon

Bill Sharon During my first several weeks working as a teacher at the state mental hospital on Ward’s Island in New York City in 1969 (armed with little else that a BA in English and a pulse – attributes deemed more than adequate by the personnel office) I had the following experience:One day in the early fall I was walking on the grounds of the hospital with some of the children in my care. A well dressed man wearing sunglasses came up to me and started a conversation. He seemed well educated and was well spoken. Out of the corner of my eye I could seem my colleagues holding each other up as they convulsed with laughter.

As I took a closer look at the man I was talking to I saw that he was had an additional pair of sunglasses perched on his head, a pair on a string around his neck and a pair in his hand that he gestured with as he spoke to me. I backed out of the conversation as quickly as I could and endured the good natured ribbing from the staff for some time. This man, according to the whispered story, was the son of a very wealthy family that had spent a small fortune on therapy and clinics and had finally given up and committed him to the state mental hospital. A few weeks after my encounter with him he disappeared into a locked ward having been deemed a danger to himself and others. (more…)
